mavra Pure gold from J. Ward, the king of obscure world music has done it again! Favorite track: Dondang Sayang Singapora, Pt 4 (Singapore/Malaysia).

Isaac Olson Not everything here will be to everyone's taste, mine included, but so much of this is so, so good. The music on here is so unremittingly intense, joyful and un-alienated that it makes all those experimental music mooks, from Schoenberg on down to bandcamp noiseniks, seem tame and impotent by comparison. This sets me to dreaming and sets me to dancing.

This is a map to a better future, if not for the world, at least for your holiday season. Late AOTY.

Oh, and the liner notes are superb.

mudslidetheo23 This is only my fav side because there is no “select all” function. The most diverse and well researched collection that I have had the pleasure of laying my eyes / ears on. This is a great encapsulation of the Excavated Shellac blog. Thank you Mr. Ward for this secret museum!! Favorite track: Lo Mourolliado (Auvergne, France).

about

This collection highlights music that is often invisible in today’s world — the incredible world of global recordings that aren’t jazz, blues, country, rock ‘n roll, R&B, or “classical.”

"Excavated Shellac: An Alternate History of the World’s Music" includes 100 recordings and 100 stories in an extensive, illustrated PDF with detailed, contextual mini-histories about both musical origins and the beginnings of the recording industry, touching on the complexities of colonialism, economic agendas, and cultural tourism.

Featuring music and musical styles from six continents and 89 different countries and regions, recorded between 1907-1967.

Includes a 186-page PDF with essays and annotations by record collector and compilation producer Jonathan Ward.
